Cellulose acetate comb

How to make plastic without oil?

Cellulose is extracted from wood or cotton using acids and several chemical reactions. The acetate is then mixed with water and precipitates in the form of small flakes which are dissolved to obtain a paste which can be given the desired shape.

To make a comb, the paste is rolled out into a thin layer that hardens once the solvents have evaporated. The acetate is then laser cut, thermoformed and sanded.

All the steps are done by hand, in France in the Jura
